What Does “Nam Hom” Actually Mean?

What Does “Nam Hom” Actually Mean?

If you’ve spent any time looking for premium coconut water, you may have come across the words Nam Hom. But Nam Hom isn’t simply another way of saying “coconut water.” It refers to a specific Thai coconut variety known for something very special: its aroma.

In Thai, the name tells you exactly what makes it different.

“Nam” means water, while “Hom” means fragrant or aromatic. Together, Nam Hom can be translated as “fragrant water.”

And once you taste, or even smell, a freshly opened Nam Hom coconut, the name starts to make a lot of sense.

Nam Hom Is a Variety of Coconut

Not every coconut grown in Thailand is a Nam Hom coconut.

Nam Hom is a distinct variety prized for its naturally aromatic water and characteristic flavor. The coconut water can have a delicate sweetness and fragrance that sets it apart from many other coconut varieties.

This is one of the reasons we chose Nam Hom coconuts for Copra. When your product contains 100% coconut water with nothing added, the coconut itself has to do all the work.

The variety matters.

But there’s another part of the story that’s just as important.

It’s Not Just the Coconut. It’s Where It Grows

Nam Hom has unique characteristics of its own, but the environment in which the coconut grows also influences the final fruit.

Our coconuts are grown in Ratchaburi, Thailand, where the local conditions help create the environment in which Nam Hom coconut palms thrive.

The region's warm, humid climate, along with the water and soil that nourish the palms, are all part of the coconut’s journey.

Much like other agricultural products, a coconut is connected to the place where it grows. Variety, climate, soil, water and farming practices all contribute to what eventually develops inside the fruit.

That means simply growing a coconut of the same variety somewhere else doesn’t necessarily produce an identical coconut.

So, What If Your Coconut Isn’t Nam Hom?

It’s still a coconut.

There are many coconut varieties grown around the world, each with its own characteristics and uses. Nam Hom is simply one particular variety, and one that has become especially valued for drinking because of its aromatic water.

For us, understanding those differences is important.

We don’t think of coconut water as a generic ingredient. We think about the variety, where it was grown, how it was cared for, when it was harvested and what happens to it afterward.

Why Copra Chooses Nam Hom

At Copra, we’ve been working with Thai coconuts for years, building relationships close to the farms and source.

We use young Nam Hom coconuts because we want the natural characteristics of the fruit to be the center of the product. Our coconut water is bottled and frozen close to the source, with no added sugar, flavors or preservatives.

Just 100% pure coconut water.

So when you see Nam Hom on a bottle of coconut water, now you know it means much more than “coconut.”

It’s a specific variety, with a specific heritage, grown for the naturally fragrant water that gave it its name.

Nam Hom: fragrant water, straight from the source.
